Good day all. This is the Charleston Police Department’s Citizens Advisory

Group (CAG) meeting schedule for 2012. The purpose of these meetings is

for Charleston Chief of Police Greg Mullen and his senior staff to meet with

residents in an open forum to get feedback on issues or concerns, community issues in general, and to keep a dialogue open with the community to form stronger partnerships. All citizens of the city of Charleston are welcome to attend these meetings.

The meetings will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. during the following

months, dates and locations:

• Team 1 area (Upper peninsula, north of Calhoun St.) meetings will be held at the John L. Dart Library at 1067 King Street and the Arthur W. Christopher Community Center at 265 Fishburne Street.

• Team 2 area (Lower Peninsula, below Calhoun St.) meetings will be held at the Charleston County Main Library at 68 Calhoun Street.

• Team 3 area (James and Johns Islands) meetings will be held at the James Island Library Branch at 1248 Camp Road.

Festival of Lights named among 100 best

The American Bus Association recently announced that the James Island County Park Holiday Festival of Lights has been named one of the Top 100 Events in North America for 2012 by a tourism industry selection committee.
The list, which was published as a supplement to the September/October issue of Destinations magazine, said that the Holiday Festival of Lights offered excellent entertainment value to tour groups and individual travelers from around the world, according to the American Bus Association.
The Top 100 Events selection committee chose the Holiday Festival of Lights based on the event’s broad appeal, its accessibility to motor coaches and skill at handling large groups and a variety of other relevant criteria
With more than 2 million lights, the three-mile driving tour delivers more light displays each year, with more than 700 displays produced this season. In addition to the driving tour, guests can park the car and experience attractions, including Santa’s Village, a 50-ton sand sculpture, annual gingerbread house competition, marshmallow roasting pit and a festival gift shop.

TIPS FOR TRICK-OR-TREATERS

§ Carry a flashlight with you for visibility.

§ Always stay in a group with an adult!

§ Never enter a stranger’s house or car for a treat!

§ Always walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the grass away from the street.

§ Look both ways before crossing the street and if you are wearing a mask take it off.

§ Wait until an adult can check your candy before you eat any of it.

§ Only accept treats from neighbors or friends you know!

TIPS FOR PARENTS

§ Plan costumes that are bright and reflective! Consider adding more reflective tape to

§ costumes + trick or treat bags. Always carry flashlights.

§ Masks can limit or block eyesight, consider makeup or cut the mask eyeholes bigger

so they can see. Remind children to remove their masks to cross the street!

§ We recommend that children do not use props like guns, knives, or swords.

§ However, if they are used, make sure they don’t look real!

§ Clear hazards from your property. Remove obstacles such as flower pots and garden

hoses, so children won’t trip on them rushing from house to house.

§ Remind your children not to eat the candy until an adult has checked their treats!

§ Your child’s school may be having a Halloween party. Call the School and ask.

§ Please explain to children the difference between tricks and vandalism.

TIPS FOR BUSINESSES/MOTORISTS

§ Heighten your awareness and be cautious of purchases that may have the potential

to cause personal injury or property damage – such as paint ball guns or large quantities of eggs.

§ Drive slowly and cautiously through your neighborhoods. Remember children may not look before crossing the street.

There has been a slight delay due to the City requesting water/drainage easements from the roads drainage system to the retention ponds. The attorney Steve Smith is working on this; it appears the HOA docs have Banker Savings Bank(the lender on the original Development) reserving the rights to the easements. Steve Smith says he does not believe they were ever transferred to Egrets Pointe HOA. He is working on trying to get this resolved.

Because of the easement issue and extensive preparation for the City dedication of the roads we have exhausted the $2500.00 attorney retainer fee.

Currently we have an overage of $907.50 and estimated less than $1000.00 more by completion.

Egrets Pointe is on the Agenda for the next public service and utilities meeting in late October. Steve Smith feels the city will work with us on the easement issue.

This week there have been some motorcycle thefts. No specific known connection, but there is also a Fall Bike Week occurring in the Myrtle beach area. Occasionally we suffer thefts of motorcycles coincidentally timed with these events. Please advise your residents or neighbors to take a few extra steps to protect their motorcycles (enclosed storage, heavier chains, blocking in with other vehicles, alarms or “kill-switches” etc.). As always, call 911 if you see suspicious activity, particularly in this case, unfamiliar people, trucks or vans near where motorcycles park.

Over the last week, particularly the last two days, all across the suburban areas from Johns Island, James Island, West Ashley, and Daniel Island, we have been receiving calls about door-to-door solicitors selling magazines. The solicitors are giving various stories, but several claim (FRAUDULENTLY) to be members of a local school sports team – One saying West Ashley High, the next saying James Isl Christian, or some other school (don’t bother trying to check them out with the schools, it is all false).

It is unclear whether you would ever actually receive your magazines, but at least in these cases the people are outright lying to make a sale. At least two are girls. They try to be convincing. Don’t be conned.

IF YOU ENCOUNTER THESE PEOPLE, TELL THEM YOU ARE NOT INTERRESTED. MAKE NOTE OF THEIR DESCRIPTION AND DIRECTION OF TRAVEL AND CALL POLICE IMMEDIATELY (577-7434) SO OFFICERS CAN RESPOND AND INTERVIEW THEM.

They will be checked for ID and warrants, at least warned and dispersed, and might even be cited or arrested. (one was arrested on Daniel Island today for drug possession). Also be advised that often other crimes follow these individuals, including neighborhood car-break-ins and fraud involving the checks citizens write to them.

See the page in the attached booklet regarding City of Charleston PEDDLER’S PERMIT which is required but none of these people have.

Roads Update

We have successfully received 62 Yes Votes for the Roads. We needed 52 Votes per our Covenants and Bylaws.

We have informed the Attorney representing Egrets Pointe in this matter that we have the required votes by our Property Owners Membership to move forward with the dedication of our Private roads to the City of Charleston.

What happens next?

The Attorney contacts the necessary personnel at the City of Charleston, Engineering and Public Services to notify them we are moving forward and the legal documentation is drawn up.

Egrets Point appears before a Utility board meeting on 9/27 to formerly request to have the roads accepted.

Egrets Point next appears before the City Councilmember’s of the City of Charleston in October to request our road be dedicated to the City, as results of the Engineers Report.

The City votes to accept. Kathleen Wilson, our representative will shepherd that process thru city council.

Egrets Point writes a check from our Reserve funds for $6000 to the City of Charleston and the manual work begins on repairing certain areas of our roads, which were displayed in an aerial photo map at the meeting on 8/24/11 at the Tides Hotel. The city will then be placing Stop Signs, Speed Limit Signs and other signage appropriate to the traffic flow.

If in the future we have any repairs to the road needed, we call the city road repair number to report and they will schedule to repair the road or replace a sign, etc. The city will be in control and maintain our roads once City Council accepts the roads in the October meeting.

Re: Please take notice of unusual activities in “Homes for sale” and vacant homes

The Police Department would like for you to pay extra attention to vacant homes for sale, as well as those that are lived-in. Vacant ones particularly have the potential to harbor criminal behavior close to your home. These homes can be used by juveniles or homeless persons to “hang out” and/or do drugs, have sexual relations, or damage the actual home. Other criminals actually steal the copper from the home or its a/c units, or appliances.

The City of Charleston Police Department would like for you to keep an eye on these properties and to not hesitate in calling Police if there appears to be someone there and it looks suspicious. We would rather you err on the side of caution.

ALSO IF YOU FEEL THESE HOMES ARE IN VIOLATION OF CITY LIVABILITY/NUISANCE ORDINANCES, REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE WITH THE ADDRESS AND ANY PERTINENT FACTS OR PHOTOS. WE WILL WORK TO GET CODE ENFORCEMENT INVOLVED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

What is “Suspicious Activity”

Activity which is obviously criminal :

Violence, Weapons, Stealing, Vandalism, Graffiti, Screams, Gun Shots.

Also activity which MIGHT be a crime happening or about to happen

– Prowlers walking around the homes

– Juveniles (single or group) during school hours, immediately after, or late at night

– People looking into vehicles

– Vehicles driving without headlights at night

– Riding a bicycle aimlessly and looking at all the homes

– Vehicle parked at a vacant residence

What to do if you own a vacant property?

Consider ways to make it look occupied - Keep blinds closed, use lights on timers, keep lawn mowed, ask a neighbor to watch the house and call Police if necessary. Have a neighbor park an extra vehicle in the driveway.

Many neighbors have been worried and inquiring about the Police presence in our neighborhood on Sunday 5/1. It was alleged that a renter at 1245 Lakefront had taken his girlfriends small white dog on Saturday night and had the dog in the home. The Police knocked several times without any success in getting anyone to answer the door. The Police asked the neighbor across the street to call the police when someone arrived home so they could investigate the allegation of the dog. There is and was no danger to anyone at any time. It was just a simple dispute between an unmarried couple. One living here in Egrets and the other living elsewhere. Thank you for every ones concern. Our neighborhood is beautiful, friendly and safe. This week is Spring Break for Public Schools. Many residents will be gone on vacation. If you are leaving town (or even just going to the beach for the day), please heed the following tips. If you are staying home, keep an extra eye out for your neighbors and the neighborhood as a whole. Call Charleston police about any suspicious people or vehicles you see: 577-7434 or 911.

VACATION SECURITY CHECKLIST
Thieves look for “TARGETS of OPPORTUNITY”. There are many things
you can do to avoid becoming a victim when you are going to be away.
Mainly, try to give the illusion you are home.

Have Deadbolt Locks installed on all exterior doors (Single-cylinder on solid doors / walls, Double-cylinder when near a window). USE THEM
Keep an inventory list and photos of all serial numbered items, engrave them with your Drivers License Number, to help get them back.
Double-check ALL windows and doors (basements, bathrooms, kitchens)
Leave a car in the driveway
Use timers for Exterior AND Interior lights, TVs, stereos, etc.
Tell a trusted neighbor about plans, leave emergency contacts and a key. Ask them to check the house and call Police if they see people around.
BUT Limit how many people you tell of your plans. Word may spread.
Cancel newspapers, have mail held, or at least ask the neighbor to bring them in for you. If leaving for a week, have them put the trash can out. It is an obvious marker that you are gone.
Upon returning, walk around the house once to look for any signs of a break-in. You don’t want to walk into a crime-in-progress. If you see something open or broken, go next door and CALL POLICE.

IF You plan to pack your vehicle the night before you leave, also plan to park it in the garage. Packed vehicles left outside overnight invite theft. If that happens, you will be missing property, and will also not get to leave on time.

New recycling carts

Hi All,

Please use your new recycling carts instead of the older blue bins.

The reason for this is the Recycling truck that comes through Egrets Point has automatic arms that picks up the new carts, these arms can not pick up the smaller blue bins. This helps out tremendously because the City knows Egrets Pointe is one of the neighborhoods that uses the new carts.

Pat Proghamer who is new on the Board or Directors for Egrets Pointe has been working hard to have the streets in Egrets Pointe dedicated to the City of Charleston for ownership, care and maintenance saving the homeowners in Egrets Pointe thousands of dollars.

The Director of Public Service, Laura Cabiness is coming out to the community to examine the roads and infrustructure for this purpose. The Board will keep the membership informed of the progress.

I received an email from the woman watching my 2 little dogs. She said at least one of my dogs has a tapeworm. Not knowing how she got it.....I asked the experienced dog rescue sitter how she got it? She said walking in an area where a dogs feces was NOT picked up and the bacteria grows and permeate into the ground....then she licks her paws....as dogs do...and it gets into their system. A pill from the vet is required to get rid of it. And there are other illnesses and diseases that can be passed on to children as a result of NOT picking up animal feces immediately. CHRISTMAS and HOLIDAY SAFETY

Christmas and the holidays are an exciting and busy time but with all the joys of the holiday season come potential safety hazards that can cause injury or even death. Help prevent injuries at Christmas and during the holidays by following these tips:

Christmas tree safety begins with the selection and purchase of a fresh tree. When buying a live pre-cut tree, make sure the tree is still alive and healthy. A fresh tree is green, needles are hard to pull from the branches, and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. Pull on the needles. The trunk should be sticky and the limbs should be very flexible. Lift the tree and bounce the cut end on the ground, if a bunch of needles come tumbling off, it isn’t a safe tree to take home.
When you get the tree home, cut off the bottom two inches of trunk to expose the fresh wood. This will create a fresh, raw cut for the tree to soak in water, allow for better water absorption and helps keep your tree from becoming a fire hazard.
Keep your tree well hydrated. Keep the water in the stand well above the fresh-cut bottom of the trunk.
Christmas trees dry out with heat, so place your tree away from heat sources such as fireplaces or heater vents.
When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label “Fire Resistant”.
Unplug the lights and decorations when you are not home.
Check each set of tree lights for frayed wires, broken bulbs and loose connections.
Never run electrical cords under the carpets or rugs, over nails or in traffic areas.
Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use. To hold lights in place, string them through hooks or insulated staples, not nails or tacks. Never pull or tug lights to remove them. Plug all outdoor electric decorations into circuits with ground fault circuit interrupters to avoid potential shocks.
In homes with small children, take special care to avoid decorations that are sharp or breakable, keep trimmings with small removable parts out of the reach of children to avoid the child swallowing or inhaling small pieces, and avoid trimmings that resemble candy or food that may tempt a young child to eat them.
Remember that mistletoe, holly berries and Christmas cactus are poisonous if swallowed.
Use care with “fire salts”, which produce colored flames when thrown on wood fires. They contain heavy metals that can cause intense gastrointestinal irritation and vomiting if eaten.
Do not burn wrapping papers in the fireplace. A flash fire may result as wrappings ignite suddenly and burn intensely.

Heating is one of the leading causes of home fires in the United States. Over 25 percent of these fires started due to improperly maintained heating equipment.

Tell residents that following a few simple safety tips can make all the difference:

Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned each year;

Ensure wood stoves are properly installed;

Make sure space heaters are kept at least three feet away from flammables and have an emergency tip-over, shut-off control;

Use a glass or metal screen in front of the fireplace to prevent sparks from igniting drapes, furniture, and carpets; and

TIPS FOR PARENTS

§ Plan costumes that are bright and reflective! Consider adding more reflective tape to

§ costumes + trick or treat bags. Always carry flashlights.

§ Masks can limit or block eyesight, consider makeup or cut the mask eyeholes bigger

so they can see. Remind children to remove their masks to cross the street!

§ We recommend that children do not use props like guns, knives, or swords.

§ However, if they are used, make sure they don’t look real!

§ Clear hazards from your property. Remove obstacles such as flower pots and garden

hoses, so children won’t trip on them rushing from house to house.

§ Remind your children not to eat the candy until an adult has checked their treats!

§ Your child’s school may be having a Halloween party. Call the School and ask.

§ Please explain to children the difference between tricks and vandalism.

TIPS FOR BUSINESSES/MOTORISTS

§ Heighten your awareness and be cautious of purchases that may have the potential

to cause personal injury or property damage – such as paint ball guns or large quantities of eggs.

§ Drive slowly and cautiously through your neighborhoods. Remember children may not look before crossing the street.

What is "Suspicious Activity?"

It is something abnormal, possibly indicating criminal activity. It may eventually be found to have a reasonable explanation, but someone needs to notify law enforcement to come check it out. This will possibly prevent a crime from occurring. If people see the suspicious activity but do not call police, the criminal completes his theft unhindered, lives are changed, the criminal continues to vicimize more people, and he might never be located.

Particularly regarding recent daytime home burglaries, often residents have reported seeing some of these indicators to police AFTER the FACT. With all the media coverage recently, it is nearly impossible not to know that these crimes are happening, so PLEASE, if you do see something odd -listed here or not- CALL POLICE.

Call either 911 (in-progress crime, prowler in a back yard) or 577-7434 for Charleston Police dispatch line. The same dispatchers answer both lines, right here at CPD. Cell phones may get County dispatchers, the effect is the same. (If you live in Sheriff's jurisdiction call 911, or 202-1700 for the administrative line)

1. Someone loitering or wandering aimlessly, on foot or a bicycle

2. Anyone staring at a home or looking into a parked car

James Island has been hit hard with burglaries over the past weekend. The mode of operation appears that the majority of the burglaries are committed during the day, while the occupants are at work. It appears the suspect(s) are gaining access thru the back of a residence mainly by kicking in or forcing open the backdoor.

The agency is currently working hard and following any and all leads to catch these thieves. Remember, when you leave your residence lock it up and turn on your alarm, if you have one, no matter how short of a time you will be gone. Criminals don’t just operate in one particular area, but move to different locations where they may find other victims, so please keep a diligent watch on your communities, and report any suspicious activity directly to the agency at 202-1700. Please pass on this information to your members and neighbors.

County Expands Recycling Program to Accept Cardboard at Curbside
Charleston County will begin picking up corrugated cardboard and more paper items during its normal curbside recycling routes

During last Saturday’s 11th Annual Earth Day Festival, Charleston County Council member Colleen Condon announced that Charleston County’s Environmental Management Department has expanded its recycling program to accept corrugated cardboard as part of its residential curbside recycling program. Corrugated cardboard is considered cardboard boxes with a middle “waffle-like” layer.

In addition to cardboard, the County is now also accepting all paper items to include envelopes with plastic windows, gift wrapping paper, etc.

“We are excited to announce that Charleston County now accepts cardboard and all types of paper in our curbside bins and dropsites,” Condon said. “If you can tear it, recycle it in your bin.”

In honor of Earth Day, the County has compost on sale for the month of April at the Bees Ferry Landfill for $1 per bag or $5 per ton, which is half off the regular price.

How to recycle cardboard:
• Residents with curbside service can now place cardboard at the curb with their regular recyclables that are placed in one bin for plastic bottles, glass bottles, aluminum cans, steel cans and aerosol cans, and in another bin for paper, such as magazines, newspaper, junk mail, paperboard (examples: cereal boxes, tissue boxes, etc.) and office paper.
• Curbside residents should flatten and place cardboard boxes, up to three feet by three feet in size, between or under their two bins or inside a separate bin. Curbside recycling in Charleston County is collected bi-weekly in the urban areas starting at 7 a.m.
• Rural residents, as well as curbside users who have cardboard pieces larger than three feet by three feet, can drop their cardboard off at the drop site locations and County staffed Convenience Centers. Charleston County Environmental Management maintains 40 cardboard drop sites and eight Convenience Centers located throughout the County.
• Residents in the rural parts of the County can utilize drop sites and Convenience Centers for recycling services. Drop site locations are open 24 hours per day and seven days a week and are not staffed. Convenience Centers are staffed by Environmental Management Department employees.

Charleston residents are reminded to be aware of door-to-door sales people, particularly “magazine sales”. Usually the concerns about these individuals are property / financial-crime related, but the possibility of a physical assault should not be ignored.

Tips:

1. Post a NO SOLICITING sign on your front door, and maybe another in the yard. (One at the front of the neighborhood is not enforceable)

2. DO NOT Open the door to ANY strangers

3. If someone claims to be from a utility or law enforcement, Request to see ID (through window) and look for an official vehicle.

4. If they are “selling” anything, know that it is perfectly fine to tell them you are not interested, to please leave.

5. If you are interested, request to see their Peddler’s Permit from the City of Charleston (again through the window - see info below).

Know that solicitors are probably breaking the law if they do any of these:

2) Do Not have a City Peddler’s Permit with them(and their company is to

have a Business Permit)

The National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive happens every year on Mother’s Day weekend. All of the food that is collected, last year it was 100,000 pounds, comes to the Lowcountry Food Bank and Amy Kosar is in charge of the coordination of the efforts. She is trying to make sure that there is as much awareness as possible. It’s so easy, all people have to do is leave a bag of food at, in or by their mailbox and the letter carrier picks it up and brings it back to the local post office. I wanted to let you all know about an upcoming event called the Tri-County Carolina Yard Experience. This is the first ever event with all three counties involved! See the attached flyer.

The dog was a chocolate lab and lives at an address on Crabwalk.

Animal Control was called out to the address and also mentioned that he will step up patrolling as they have had a lot of problems in that area of the neighborhood.

Noise, Nuisance and Speeding Issues

Noise disturbances, pet nuisances and speeding are a common occurrence in many communities and can be a very frustrating problem. While some governing documents may address nuisances in your Community, enforcement of these restrictions by your Association is rather limited. Noise is immaterial and lacks substance. It’s also very difficult to prove- ultimately a court of law has to decide a case. An Association cannot convincingly measure noise without proper instruments. Pet droppings and barking are similarly dubious to prove conclusively. Without tangible, physical proof the Association has little recourse. However, as a homeowner, there are several things you can do should a nuisance affect you: First, kindly ask your neighbor to correct the situation before involving the authorities. If the problem persists, report the violation to the appropriate municipality police department. Try to document as much evidence as possible to give to the authorities. Documentation is essential when prosecuting a case so be sure to collect as much information as you can for the police. Should a disturbance happen in the City of Charleston, (noise ordinance calls for quiet after 11:00 p.m.) you may call the Livability Court at (843) 805-3226 and ask to speak to Corporal Robinson regarding your concerns. Other municipalities have various protections and some such as Dorchester County have considerable fines for pet droppings. Speeding of vehicles is entirely a police matter. Calls to the local office may generate increased vigilance by the local PD.

usually within 36 hours. During the “watch” period, prepare to take
immediate action to protect your family and property in case a “warning” is
issued.

warning, usually within 24 hours. Complete all storm preparations and
evacuate if directed to do so by local officials.
Short Term Watches and Warnings – Provide detailed information on specific
hurricane threats, such as tornadoes, floods and high winds.
Public Advisory – Issued by the National Hurricane Center and provides critical
hurricane warning and forecast information.
Tropical Cyclone Forecast/Advisory – Issued by the National Hurricane Center
and outlines the meteorological reasoning behind the warnings and forecasts.
Strike Probability Forecast – Provides a measure of the forecast track accuracy.
The probabilities have no relation to the tropical cyclone intensity.
Hurricane Local Statements – Issued by the National Weather Service and give
greater detail on how the storm will impact your area.
Short Term Forecast – Provides updated information on what the weather will
be over the next few hours in the immediate area.
AN IMPORTANT NOTE:
All public safety operations in the field will cease once the winds reach a sustained
speed of 60 mph. These conditions are risky to the safety of law enforcement, fire
and EMS personnel. If you have an emergency during this time, if you are
stranded by rising water or if you have chosen to ignore the evacuation notice
and then change your mind, once the winds reach this thresh-hold, public safety
personnel are not going to be able to assist you. However, the Emergency
Operations Center (EOC) will remain operational and as long as you have
telephone service, information can be received from the EOC to help you until
someone can reach you after the winds calm down. WAITING TO LEAVE MAY
JEOPARDIZE YOUR LIFE AND THE LIVES OF OTHERS. Once the wind speed
reduces to below 60 mph, public safety crews will once again respond to
emergency call.

YOUR OUR HURRICANE PLAN:
Have a practice drill to determine what everyone’s responsibility will be.
Educate all family members in CPR and other first aid measures.
Teach children how to use a fire extinguisher and when & how to call 911 for
emergency assistance.
Check all fire alarms, smoke alarms, etc. for proper operation.
Determine what the criteria will be as to whether you evacuate or stay in your
home.
Know your evacuation routes and determine which route you will use should
an evacuation order be issued.
Determine in advance your evacuation destination. If you will not be staying
with a friend or family member, make hotel reservations at this location as
soon as a “watch” is issued. Remember, that during an evacuation several
towns may be evacuated at the same time and hotels will fill up quickly in all
surrounding areas. Reservations can be cancelled.
Make a decision about vehicles. If you have more than one vehicle and will
not be taking all of them with you determine where the other vehicles will be
left during the storm.
Make a decision about boats and other recreational vehicles.
If you have pets, determine whether they will evacuate with you or be placed
in a shelter.
Have a list of phone numbers, such as family members, doctors, employers,
insurance company’s, etc.
Make arrangements for extra cash on hand.
Catalog all personal items NOW. Include description (brand name, model
number, age, purchase price, place of purchase, etc.) Take a picture of
everything and make two copies of the pictures and lists. Keep one copy with
you and send the other to a relative or friend out of town. Never give the
insurance company the only copy.
Have a secure place for all valuables & documents that you will need to take
with you, such as birth certificates, property deeds, insurance policies, etc.
Determine an out-of-town person who can be a “point of contact” to
communicate messages if communications are down for an extended period of
time.
Prepare and maintain a “Hurricane Kit” (a list of recommended supplies is
included). It is recommended that you have approximately 7 gallons of water
for each person and food supplies for a minimum of 2 weeks.
Check all flashlights, battery operated radios & TVs, and other supplies in your
“Hurricane Kit” for proper operation.
Evaluate your home to determine if you can make improvements that will
provide better protection. If you have an older home, getting a professional
opinion about updated building codes, etc. may be helpful in determining
beneficial improvements.

You should also review your insurance policy, with your agent, to determine if
you need to make any coverage changes. Be sure to ask questions about
coverage for updated building codes, demolition coverage for an undamaged
portion of your home, flood coverage, understand your coverage and
deductibles, clarify any exclusions, verify that in the event of a complete loss
you will have the coverage you need to re-build, ask what you will need to
prove a claim, find out what their procedures are relative to immediate
protection of the home following a loss, ask who to contact immediately
following the storm and get phone numbers, how long you may expect to
wait for an adjuster, how contact will be made in the event that all
communications are lost for a period of time, and any other questions that
you can think of. Preparing now will make the claims process much easier and
less stressful for everyone.
Obtain and prepare plywood, plastic, shutters or other protective provision
for windows & doors. Install and inspect the covering in advance of an
emergency to insure proper fit.
PREPARING THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOME:
The most important thing you can do to protect your home is to protect the
openings where the wind can get in. Available options include hurricane
shutters (obtain DRB approval first!), plywood covering during the storm, etc.
Check your garage doors and consider installing braces on them.
Keep all windows completely closed during a storm.
Bring in any objects that can blow away, including garbage cans, lawn
furniture, garden tools, grills, plants, etc. Anchor objects that cannot be
brought inside.
Disconnect propane gas tanks and turn off the main gas line.
Turn off gas appliances at their individual shut-off valves inside your home, if
accessible. Do not turn them off at the outside meter.
Fill your vehicle’s gas tanks as soon as possible to avoid long lines and delays.
Keep a full tank of gas immediately before and following the storm because
gas may not be available in the area for several days (remember, pumps don’t
work when there is no electricity!).
Park any vehicles that are not evacuating with you in a garage or carport. If
this is not available, park your vehicle as close to the side of the house as
possible away from any trees that may fall.
Do not trim trees or shrubbery immediately before a storm, because the debris
will not be collected. This debris can become a flying obstacle during a storm
and be very dangerous during high winds.
Prepare your pool. Lower the water level of your swimming pool
approximately 6 inches to accommodate heavy rains but do not drain it
completely. Add extra chlorine to the pool and turn off electricity to the pool
equipment.

PREPARING THE INSIDE OF YOUR HOME:
If you choose not to evacuate or it is not a feasible option, you should prepare
the inside of your home in advance to ensure your quality of life in the days
following a hurricane. Be sure you have your supplies and that they are in a
secure location.
Choose a “Safe Room” where you will ride out the storm. Normally, this
would be a hallway, large interior closet or an interior bathroom with no
windows.
Equip your “safe room” with a battery-operated radio or TV and extra
batteries; chairs, sleeping bags or cushions; snacks and drinking water; towels;
games, cards, books; etc. A slow moving storm could mean a long wait.
Have a mattress ready to move into your safe room if advised to do so by
emergency personnel. You should only have to do this in an extremely severe
storm.
Turn off and unplug any unnecessary electrical equipment, especially sensitive
electronics BEFORE THE POWER GOES OUT. If the power goes out, turn off
the circuit breaker or remove fuses. You might want to leave on one circuit
breaker that operates a lamp, so that you will know when the power has been
restored.
If the electricity goes off, use only flashlights. Never use candles or kerosene
lamps during the storm.
Never cook during the storm. A gust of wind could spread a fire, and the fire
department would not be able to respond.
Tell stories, sing songs or play games to keep children calm.
Do not go outside during the storm, unless winds have calmed briefly and
protective repairs are absolutely necessary. The winds and rain may stop for a
few minutes to more than half an hour and then can suddenly pick back up
again from the opposite direction, possibly with greater force than before.
Turn your refrigerator & freezer to their coldest settings. Freeze water in
plastic jugs and use them to fill empty spaces in your refrigerator and freezer to
help keep food cool. Cover your refrigerator with blankets and secure them
with ropes to keep the coldness in. If you open the refrigerator only when
necessary and close it quickly, you can keep food cool for up to 2 days
without electricity.
Prepare a water supply for bathing and sanitary purposes by storing water in
the bathtub and other jugs and bottles. Seal the bathtub well by caulking
around the drain to keep the water from running out. Remember that this
water is NOT for drinking.
Place valuables and personal papers in a waterproof container or plastic
garbage bags and store them on the top shelf of a closet. Include voter
registration cards, passports, visas, and all important papers.
Take identification and insurance papers with you if you leave your home
(you should take a recent electric or other utility bill, voter registration card,
etc. with you to prove permanent residency and facilitate re-entry).

Fill clean, sanitary jugs with water for drinking. You will need a minimum of 7
gallons per person. Sterilize the jugs by putting a little chlorine bleach (plain,
no lemon) in some water, sloshing them around and rinsing thoroughly.

AFTER THE STORM HAS PASSED:
Stay tuned to the radio or TV and remain indoors until you hear the “all
clear”.
Stay away form ALL downed power lines. The line can still be “live” whether
the power is off in your neighborhood or not.
Do not use your telephone unless you have an emergency.
Do not call 911 except for life-threatening situations.
If your home has sustained structural damage, do not move back in until local
officials check it. The county has plans to certify buildings for safety before
habitation.
Do not allow children to walk around without shoes.
Avoid weakened bridges and washed out roads. Do not drive into flooded
areas.
Stay on firm ground. Moving water only 6 inches deep can sweep you off
your feet. Standing water may also be electrically charged from underground
or downed power lines.
Check gas, water and electrical lines and appliances for damage.
Avoid using candles and other open flames indoors. Use a flashlight to inspect
for damage.
Do not cut trees that are touching or even near power lines.
Do not pile debris near power or telephone poles or equipment. This will
delay service from being restored.
Do not call the police or utility companies immediately to report downed
power lines, broken gas or water mains or overturned gas tanks.
Utility companies will restore electric, gas, and water and/or telephone service
as quickly as possible. If service has been restored in your neighborhood and
you are still having trouble, call the utility company.
Remember that while emergency crews will begin clearing roads and effecting
repairs immediately after the storm, neighborhood streets have a lower
priority than major thoroughfares.
Don’t wait for the city or county to clear your streets. If possible, get ablebodied
neighbors together to clear a path for traffic and emergency vehicles.
Solid waste departments will collect trash as soon as possible. Priority is given
to household garbage, so separate it from other trash and debris. If you fail to
separate your garbage, you could create a health risk and attract rodents and
other animals.
DO NOT CONNECT A PORTABLE OR RV GENERATOR TO YOUR HOUSE
WIRING. THE POWER FROM THESE GENERATORS CAN ACTUALLY FLOW
OUT OF YOUR HOUSE AND RECHARGE THE LINES, CAUSING INJURY TO
POWER COMPANY AND TELEPHONE COMPANY EMPLOYEES. Generators

should only be connected to electrical systems that have been properly
designed, equipped and inspected by the electric company or building
department.
Portable generators should be used only OUTSIDE of your home. Generators
emit carbon monoxide gas that is poisonous.
When using a generator, run a separate, heavy-duty properly grounded
extension cord from the generator directly to EACH of the electrical appliances
you want to power.
When using a generator, calculate the total power consumption (number of
watts) of all the appliances you intend to connect to be sure that you stay
within the load capacity of your generator. DO NOT OVERLOAD THE
GENERATOR.
Do not drink tap water immediately after a hurricane. Assume a boil water
order is in effect until you are informed it has been lifted.
If you did not store sufficient drinking water and must use water from the tap,
do the following: FIRST, strain the water through a paper towel or several
layers of thick cloth to remove dirt before purifying, or let the water settle in a
container for 24-hours so that solid particles will sink to the bottom; SECOND,
use one of the following methods to purify the water…(1) keep water boiling
at a rolling rate for 3-5 minutes, OR add 4 water purification tables per gallon,
OR add 12 drops of 2% tincture of iodine per gallon of water, OR add 8
drops of household bleach (without lemon or other additives) per gallon of
water.
It is important to take action immediately after the storm to safeguard your
home and prevent more damage from occurring. That is why it is important
to have all of the necessary supplies on hand.
Take pictures and make detailed lists & descriptions of all damages inside and
outside of your home.
If you do not have insurance, the Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA) will set up disaster application centers within 2 weeks after the storm.
If you hire an individual or business to make repairs for you, check to make
sure that they have a current business license, are properly insured (including
liability & worker’s comp), and possess a permit authorizing them to do the
work. These safe guards will help to protect you from unsavory individuals or
businesses taking advantage of you.

There is a law that requires your dog to be on a leash when walking. This is for the protection of your pet and others. When walking your dog through Egret's Pointe, remember to put them on a leash. This also pertains to cats, there is a city ordinance, please keep your cat on your own personal property and do not let wander onto other homeowners properties, this is for the safety of your cat and the respect of other neighbors.

I would just like to remind everyone of certain pond etiquette. Only homeowners of Egret's Pointe are allowed to fish in the pond. If a fish is caught, please release it back into the pond. If you accidentally killed a fish, please dispose of properly and do not throw it back into the pond. Please respect the wildlife that lives there and act responsible. All children should be accompanied by an adult when fishing at the pond. Please remind your child that the pond is not an outside toilet!!!!!

On Wednesday April 22^nd, Palmetto Lawn Care will be at Egret’s Pointe to put a fresh application of Pine Straw on the landscaping.

After several attempts to have the fountain on from 8am – 8pm, it has been determined that we need a new timer which will be installed within a week

Please be cautious while driving in the neighborhood and please watch your speed, there have been a few close calls with children playing and cars driving to fast especially where Lakefront Dr and Crabwalk meet.

As warmer weather has arrived everyone has been getting the spring cleaning fever, which is GREAT!

Please remember there are certain items the trash collectors will not take. If you are unsure of what the restrictions are, please contact the City of Charleston.

Remember not to put trash or recycling out until the evening prior to pickup.

There has been a few dogs roaming around the neighborhood without their owners. If you are a dog owner, please keep your dog in your yard or inside your home. Unless of course you are taking your dog for a walk on a leash.
